Fiscal Responsibility and debt

This is the text of an email I recently sent to the Congressman who represents my district (Steve Southerland.)

I agree wholeheartedly that fiscal irresponsibility has gotten the nation into a great deal of trouble. But it is not the Federal Government who has been irresponsible but indeed the entire country. From the banks and financial institutions  dealing in junk bonds and toxic assets to the majority of Americans who live on credit and the many who created the housing bubble which has now burst by thinking they could get rich by speculating on properties that they couldn’t afford.
A balanced budget is a good idea but it does not preclude borrowing. Our family lives entirely within our means and puts a good deal of our earnings into savings of various kinds. Yet we also owe money on a mortgage, as you do on your house in Panama City. You also have a loan on a boat (we do not although we also own a Century runabout – 1946 Seamaid 15′.) The average credit card debt of card holders in America is over $14,000. We pay our credit cards off entirely each month. So, we have a balanced family budget with debt. Over the years we have been able to move into better homes and neighborhoods by balancing increasing debt (bigger mortgages) with increasing revenue (salaries.) The key point here is that improvement and growth require revenues. Not cuts. I’m sure your own life story includes an increase in your family’s earnings (revenues) as well as debt over the years. What is the difference between your situation and that of the nation, beside the fact that your debt is in part on luxury items (e.g. a boat worth over $100,000) and the federal government’s debt is due wars (which the previous President lied — remember “weapons of mass destruction?” — about to get us into) and a modest amount of social welfare (compared to other Western developed nations.)
Finally, I did not afford you the opportunity to represent me. I voted for, and will continue to vote for someone who truly has my and my neighbor’s best interests at heart.
